Poly (lactic acid) is flammable as common synthetic thermoplastics whichwill limit its application and development in some special fields. Therefore,the improvement of flame –retardant performance of Poly (lactic acid) (PLA)PLAhas been an urgent task. α-Zirconium Phosphate (ZrP) is considered as a newemerging class of the most favorable layered crystals for the preparation ofmultifunction polymer /inorganic nanocomposites. Herein, A novel functionalizedα-zirconium phosphate (F-ZrP) modified with intumescent flame retardant wassynthesized by co-precipitation method and characterized. PLA/F-ZrP nanocompositeswere prepared by melt blending method. The results showed that the addition offlame retardant F-ZrP slightly affect PLA's thermal stability, butsignificantly improve the flame retardancy of PLA composites. In comparisonwith neat PLA, the LOI value of PLA/F-ZrP was increased from 19.0 to 26.5, andthe UL-94 rating was enhanced to V-0 as the loading of F-ZrP at 10%. SEMresults suggested the introduction of F-ZrP in the PLA system can form compactintumescent char layer during burning. All these results showed that the F-ZrPperformed good flame retardancy for PLA.
